Features musical assistance from, among others, bassist Larry Ridley, drummer Don Lamond and guest stars Kenny Burrell and Grant Green on guitar. This issue offers the first time that Barney Kessel was ever recorded live while playing in a night club. As a bonus track this CD concludes 'Blue Mist', a Kessel original, which is the springboard for stunning "conversations" among three guitar giants - Barney Kessel, Kenny Burrell, and Grant Green captured at Ronnie Scott's in London in 1969. A must for collectors.

Lenny Breau

In 1981 Hemme Luttjeboer heard the late great Lenny Breau perform with bassist
Don Thompson at the Bourbon Street Jazz club in Toronto, Ontario.
It was a laid back setting replete with dinner and wine.

This was Hemme's first live acquaintance with Lenny and he didn't disappoint.
Between sets he asked him if he would play 'The Claw' (Jerry Reed).
He graciously obliged by performing it on his custom 7 string acoustic which featured a high A.

Next to Hemme's table sat a girl who was capturing Lenny with pen on a piece of the table napkin.
After Lenny's dazzling solo set Hemme approached her and asked if she was willing to part with
her sketch. Lenny, then quietly and humbly autographed it for him.

New York's Village Vanguard

The Village Vanguard is a jazz club in Greenwich Village in New York City on 7th Avenue South.
The club opened on February 22, 1935 by Max Gordon (1901-1991).
At first it also featured other forms of music such as folk music and beat poetry, but it switched to an all-jazz format in 1957.

History
Over 100 jazz albums have been recorded at the venue since the (originally single) album under Sonny Rollins' name in 1957. The two most famous engagements in the club's history are probably those of Bill Evans and John Coltrane, both of which took place in 1961. Wynton Marsalis regularly recorded at the club in the early 1990s; the results were issued in a multi-disc set. Other musicians to release notable albums recorded live at the Village Vanguard include Dexter Gordon, Chris Connor, Keith Jarrett, Woody Shaw, Joe Henderson, and Brad Mehldau.

Since Max Gordon died in 1991, the club has been run by Lorraine Gordon, his widow

Clifford Brown At The Cotton Club 1956 - 320 kbps

Clifford Brown - Max Roach Quintet
Clifford Brown on trumpet
Sonny Rollins on tenor saxophone
Richie Powell at the piano
George Morrow on bass
and The World's Greatest Drummer Max Roach

"I play the trumpet, my name is Clifford Brown."
With these simple and unpretentious words, Brownie introduced himself to the audience of the Cotton Club in Cleveland, Ohio, on May 28, 1956.

May 28 was the opening night of a week-long engagement for the Max Roach-Clifford Brown Quintet, featuring Sonny Rollins on tenor sax, Richie Powell (Bud Powell's younger brother) on piano, and George Morrow on bass. Despite the exceptional talent of the individual band members, the quintet proved to be more than the sum of its parts. The Cleveland Cotton Club performances contained on this package - issued here for the first time ever - were recorded on amateur equipment and include sets played by the quintet on May 28, May 29 and June 1, 1956. As a bonus to these amazing performances, we present another previously unissued set: a radio broadcast by the same quintet coming from the Town Casino, in Buffalo, New York, recorded on February 26, 1956.
