REVIEW:
AFTER HOURS is an excellent live document of the early roots of bebop, capturing this exciting music in the process of being built by its pioneering architects. Recorded live in New York City at jam sessions at Minton's Playhouse and Monroe's Uptown House in 1941, these tapes feature young modernists Charlie Christian, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Kenny Clarke, and Don Byas as they pushed the structural materials of swing toward something new and intense.

Beyond the historical significance of these sessions, however, the music is simply fabulous. There are revisions of "Stardust" and "Stompin' at the Savoy, " but the tunes are mainly blues-based improvisations, with plenty of syncopated play and stretched-out soloing from all involved. Christian's guitar takes center stage--his fluid, fleet-fingered style and mellow amplified tone have become such a stock part of jazz guitar, it is hard to remember that he almost single-handedly wrote the book. Though Gillespie gets double-billing on this set, he only appears on four of the nine tunes, but one can hear early hints of the advanced technical style that would explode in his work with Charlie Parker in the later '40s. This music is truly classic.

Minton’s Days (1940-45)

This revolutionary period of music, a round-up of jazz giants in New York City’s Minton’s Café, later known as ‘bebop’ movement, was a doomed one, too. Due to strike of ‘American Federation of Musicians’, there isn’t any official recording from that time and there are only a few low quality private recordings that have opened their way into collector’s archives.
Monk’s role in those sessions was probably more than anybody else; after all he was the house pianist and arranger of the new materials that was coming from everywhere. It was his harmonic variations that fueled the bop revolution. All cats, from Coleman Hawkins to Don Byas, were there. Charlie Christian on guitar was a min force. The drummer of the sessions was Kenny ‘Klook’ Clarke. After hours, when the whole town was asleep, Roy Eldridge, Hot ‘Lips’ Page and Dizzy Gilespie, with their fiery trumpets and free from commercial gigs were the regular guests of the café.

The only record left from Minton’s, under the Monk’s own name is After Hours at Minton’s, recorded in 1943 and issued by obscure “DefinitiveClassics” label. The line up consists of Eldridge (tp), page (tp), Herbie Fields (ts), Al Sears (ts), Christian (g), Nick Fenton (b), and Clarke (d).
Only for completation of this period, there are four tracks from Monk in Coleman Hawkins’ Bean and the Boys (Prestige PR 7824) recorded October 19, 1944 in New York City and a live recording with Dizzy Gillespie’s orchestra in Spotlite club,1946, issued under the title, Dizzy Gillespie '46 Live At The Spotlite

Conrad Herwig is one of New York's more prominent young progressive/mainstream trombonists. He has recorded and/or performed with a number of famous leaders, including, but not limited to, Joe Henderson, Jack DeJohnette, and Paquito D'Rivera. Herwig is an alumni of the famous University of North Texas jazz program, an experience that obviously prepared him well as a big band player. He began his professional career in the early '80s with Clark Terry's big band; stints with Buddy Rich, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Mel Lewis, and others were to follow. Herwig became an increasingly in-demand sideman in the '90s. He is an accomplished pedagogue, having taught clinics and workshops around the world. Herwig is on the faculty at William Patterson College in New Jersey. His seventh album as a leader, The Latin Side of John Coltrane, emphasizes an affinity for South American idioms. Criss Cross followed in 1998 and a year later, Herwig resurfaced with Osteology. Unseen Universe followed in fall 2000.

Trombonist Conrad Herwig, who had previously recorded The Latin Side of John Coltrane, is at it again. Another Kind of Blue has versions of the five songs from Miles Davis' Kind of Blue ("So What," "Freddie Freeloader," "Blue in Green," "All Blues," and "Flamenco Sketches") plus "Petits Machins" performed by a Latin jazz nonet. The results are quite enjoyable and, with the exception of the repertoire and a couple orchestrated sections for the ensemble (the introduction of "So What" by Bill Evans and Paul Chambers, and Davis' trumpet solo on "Freddie Freeloader"), the music has little connection to the original Kind of Blue with Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Cannonball Adderley. Instead, the transformation serves as a good excuse for the all-star group to romp and come up with fresh ideas. Herwig, trumpeter Brian Lynch, baritonist Mario Rivera, and flutist Dave Valentin have their moments, but Paquito D'Rivera on alto and clarinet constantly steals solo honors; he is too exciting to be denied. The horns are inspired by a blazing rhythm section consisting of pianist Edsel Gomez, bassist John Benitiz, drummer Robby Ameen, and percussionist Richie Flores. It is particularly interesting hearing such unlikely material as "Blue in Green" and "Flamenco Sketches" turned into Afro-Cuban jazz. Another Kind of Blue is quite successful on its own terms and well worth picking up.

While most of this music on Miles Davis at Newport 1958 has appeared on either the Miles and Monk At Newport compilation or the Newport Jazz Festival Live album, this is the first time that the material has been presented in its entirety. The personnel in the sextet had changed slightly by this time. Red Garland and Philly Joe Jones were replaced by revolutionary pianist Bill Evans and newcomer Jimmy Cobb on drums. Especially notable in this performance was the way Coltrane's abilities had progressed. But even though the group was bursting with musical inspiration and fresh ideas, Miles was still the undisputed heart and soul of the band. Several of the tracks performed here came from 'Round About Midnight and Milestones; but in the live setting, the music soars and the interaction between the artists is remarkable. Unlike Jazz at The Plaza, recorded just two months later, this album was intended for commercial release and the sound quality is much better as well.

Although in 1957 some listeners considered swing and cool jazz to be at the extreme poles of the jazz world, this LP, recorded at that year's Newport Jazz Festival, shows just how similar the two idioms were. The Teddy Wilson Trio (with bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Specs Powell) plays lightly swinging versions of four swing era standards and welcomes baritonist Gerry Mulligan to sit in on a spirited rendition of "Sweet Georgia Brown," and then Jeru's quartet (with trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, bassist Joe Benjamin, and drummer Dave Bailey) plays cooly exciting versions of "My Funny Valentine" and "Utter Chaos"; one could easily imagine Wilson helping out on those two songs. Strangely enough, this LP reissue of the original set also contains three standards by the Don Elliott Quartet with pianist Bill Evans, but never lists the full personnel (mellophonist Elliott, bassist Ernie Furtado, and drummer Al Beldini) or acknowledges the music in the liner notes. The St. Nick's date was privately recorded by tenor saxophonist Don Lanphere with the collaboration of trombonist Jimmy Knepper (who was best known for his multiple collaborations with Charles Mingus and for being knocked out by Mingus during a dispute, Knepper also wrote the original liner notes for the first issue of St. Nicks).

Some of the other reviews for this album were dissapointing for me to read because this has been one of my favorite records since I bought it 3 years ago. It is recorded by tape when the technology was brand new. It is also edited so you hear nothing but Bird's solos and Melodys. However, he sounds absolutely incredible! Any Bird fanatic would agree. Charlie Parker fans aren't listening to him for the great recording quality, we're interested in what he's going to come up with next. Buy this album now, hear why people are still transfixed by his melodys. The shinning tracks are Visa, I Didn't Know What Time it Was and Embraceable You. Disregard everything anyone else says about this record; if you're into Bird just buy it. And contrary to what Mr. Texas said Bird definately soars. ~ Amazon
