Chet Baker's performance here is both fragile and passionate. Baker is joined by Van Morrison and reunited with Elvis Costello, with whom he recorded Shipbuilding at Ronnie Scott's intimate English club. In interviews with Costello, the pain and happiness hidden between his wrinkled, tired face pour out like so many notes.

Chet Baker's appearance at Ronnie Scott's in London was taped near the end of his life, when the ravages of drug addiction were apparent in his face as well as his demeanor on stage, but the magic was still present in his playing. Baker starts slowly with the bittersweet ballad "Ellen David," following it with his fragile vocal interpretation of a lightly swinging "Just Friends," though he is a decent scat singer. "Shifting Down" is an obscure work by Kenny Dorham that is one of the high points of this concert for Baker. Unfortunately, the visuals to the opening of the funky "Love for Sale" are ruined somewhat by the director's inane decision to emulate MTV videos and use a series of stills instead of just sticking to the action on stage. Interview excerpts taped offstage are interspersed between some of the tracks, though Elvis Costello's technique as an interviewer is rather erratic. Guest segments include a painfully dull rendition of "Send in the Clowns," featuring Van Morrison blandly reciting the lyrics with a cheat sheet in hand for reference; Elvis Costello also has to have the lyrics handy while performing his numbers with Baker ("The Very Thought of You" and a medley of "You Don't Know What Love Is" and "I'm a Fool to Want You"), which he delivers with a straight pop approach rather than trying to improvise, although he at least seems to know these standards. Pianist Michel Grailler and bassist Riccardo del Fra provide excellent support, the camera work and sound are excellent except for a few minor lapses, and the audience is respectfully silent until the conclusion of each piece -- a near impossibility in most nightclubs in Baker's homeland. Fans of Chet Baker will greatly enjoy this DVD, warts and all. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi

“Just three months before his death, pianist BIll Evans was extensively recorded at the Village Vanguard. Originally, one or two LPs were to be released featuring his brilliant new trio (with bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joe LaBarbera), but after the innovative pianist's death, the project was stalled for over 15 years. Finally, when Warner Bros. got around to it, a definitive six-CD box set was released (although unfortunately in limited-edition form). Evans sounded quite energized during his last year, Johnson was developing quickly as both an accompanist and a soloist, and the interplay by the trio members (with subtle support from LaBarbera) sometimes bordered on the telepathic. The playing throughout these consistently inventive performances ranks up there with the Evans-Scott LaFaro-Paul Motian trio of 20 years earlier.”

Release in January 27th, 2009 on CAM Jazz (some sources say it was November 4, 2008)

“Martial Solal is a nuclear physicist of the piano. He tinkers with the subatomic structure of compositions, moving elements around, pulling them apart, and smashing them together in ways that both surprise and delight. Solal was born Algiers in 1927, settling in Paris in 1950 where he worked with Django Reinhardt and American expatriates Sidney Bechet and Don Byas. He has maintained an impressive creative profile for the past 50 years that involves solo, small group, and big band formats. Solal has also been a successful movie soundtrack composer, producing music for Les Acteurs (2000) and Ballade a blanc (1983).
Now in his 80s, his performances take on the aire of a grand event. As such, it is fitting that his October 12, 2007 solo appearance at New York City's Village Vanguard was captured and released as Live at the Village Vanguard: I Can't Give You Anything But Love. His previous live recording at the Vanguard, NY1: Live at the Village Vanguard (Blue Note, 2003) was met with much adulation as was the show that generated it in the wake of September 11, 2001.
Relaxed and amiable, Solal banters with the crowd in his French-accented English, explaining that they both must be good as he is making a live recording. He then proceeds to stroll through a recital of seven standards and two original compositions in what can only be described as in a very post-modern, deconstructionist manner. His command of the material is paradoxically dense and atomized with playing that betrays a knowledge of all styles of jazz piano, which he picks and chooses to employ at his creative whim. That "whim" is very informed. "On Green Dolphin Street?" he turns the familiar melody inside out, re- harmonizing and redefining the piece well beyond its early 20th Century origins.
Solal transforms the interrogative "Lover Man" into a declarative statement of fact and strains the brains of Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight" through modernity's defining sieve, exposing all of the soft underparts Monk didn't. Solal extends the language of Monk further than any other pianist. His two original compositions, "Centre De Gravité" and "Ramage" are no less compelling, acting as an extension of Solal's artistic command. Live at the Village Vanguard: I Can't Give You Anything But Love is as perfect a jazz recording as we could hope for. Few giants remain, so let us honor Martial Solal.
