The name Lennie Tristano was conspicuously absent from Ken Burns' monolithic jazz documentary. That's no small omission; Tristano's group, which included the saxophonists Warne Marsh and Lee Konitz (also ignored by Burns) was the first to record what later came to be known as free jazz -- music improvised without pre-ordained melodies, harmonies, or meter. Needless to say, that wasn't mentioned by Burns, either. Tristano did it in 1949, the year this record was recorded, with what is essentially the same band (Konitz is absent here, though he was a regular member of Tristano's group at the time). This record gives no direct evidence of the band's free jazz experiments -- although Tristano is given composer's credit on all cuts, the disc is comprised mostly of standard harmonic frameworks played without reference to theme. However, it does reflect the band's prevailing emphasis on unfettered linear improvisation. The quintet tracks here were recorded by the group's bassist, Arnold Fishkin, during performances at the old Birdland in New York. The solo piano cuts were recorded in Chicago, four years earlier. The sound's rough, but not unlistenable, especially given the historical implication of the music. Listening to this is like being a fly on the wall of the world's most famous jazz club, witnessing history in the making. It really can't be said that Tristano's piano style was cut from whole cloth -- there's too much of a Bud Powell influence -- but there have been few musicians on any instrument who played with more spontaneous melodic invention. Two others who did were Marsh and guitarist Billy Bauer, also present here; this band placed great importance of creating "in the moment," and listening to this music made over 50 years ago reminds listeners of the value in such an approach. Little jazz being made at the turn of the millennium rivals this set in terms of raw creativity. Popular misconceptions aside, this is an important document.

This is the first time that THELONIOUS MONK has been recorded ‘live’ out of the studio. Perhaps the most immediately apparent difference is that Monk on the job seems more interested in himself as a pianist, as a performer, as (and this is very much a part of this artist) a showman. There is also, of course, the give-and-take of audience reaction: applause, conversation, the comings and goings of a typical Five-Spot crowd (made up in various percentages of neoBohemian types who live nearby. musicians, jazz fans, the merely curious-and those who manage to combine more than one of these categories.)

Monk had worked from summer, 1957, through the rest of the year at the Five Spot, where he was regularly drawing overflow crowds. After a breather, he was brought back in late spring of '58. The crowds and their enthusiasm were as great, or greater. The group, however, was changed. The original quartet, with John Coltrane on tenor, Wilbur Ware bass, Shadow Wilson, drums, had never been recorded as a unit because of various complications (largely contractual), a drastic oversight that it is hoped may someday be remedied. The present group is, of course, not the same, nor does it sound the same, nor could it. Monk himself is a constantly changing artist; also, he is amazingly sensitive to the nature of the men he works with. To a large degree, Thelonious molds any group he leads into his pattern; but it is important to recognize that the pattern he builds for a particular group comprehends and utilizes the specific values of the men with him. Aside from the basic fact that both are modern tenormen of outstanding talents, Johnny Griffin and John Coltrane art: not the same man, and Monk is fully aware of this. Whether a particular listener likes one or the other ‘better’, is quite beside the point; the point is that this group is the Monk quartet with Griffin, and its approach: style and even repertoire (all within the overall Monk pattern) clearly show that. This is especially true for the two recent Monk compositions recorded here for the first time, Coming On The Hudson and Light Blue.

Live at the Jazz Standard showcases trumpeter Dave Douglas — on cornet this time! — and his quintet performing Live at the NYC club the Jazz Standard on various nights in December of 2006. Joining Douglas here are tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin, Fender Rhodes specialist Uri Caine, bassist James Genus and drummer Clarence Penn. Originally released as complete download-only sets on Douglas' own Greenleaf Label website, here Douglas has pruned the sets down to 18 cuts over two discs. Furthermore, he's also focused the album on original compositions never before released on album. In that sense, fans of Douglas' past work with this ensemble on such studio efforts as 2002's Infinite and 2006's Meaning and Mystery will surely dig this stuff as it essentially plays as an all new recording and not just a live documentation of the quintet. In fact, disc two focuses on compositions Douglas wrote while delving into the iconic work of innovative pocket-trumpeter Don Cherry and were initially intended for inclusion on Meaning and Mystery. This is soulful, visceral, moody and propulsive post-bop that often leans heavily toward late-'60s and '70s modal and free jazz.

Guitarist Barney Kessel performs a set of overly relaxed warhorses with a couple of quietly supportive sidemen (bassist Kunimitsu Inaba and drummer Tetsujirah Obara) at a Tokyo club. Laurindo Almeida's "Barniana" is the only obscure material on a low-key and lightly swinging date which finds Kessel emphasizing his chordal work on such tunes as "Girl From Ipanema," "Bye Bye Blackbird" and "Willow Weep For Me." Sleepy music.

At the 26th Annual Academy Awards in March 1954, Audrey Hepburn won the Best Actress Oscar for Roman Holiday (1953). Miss Hepburn had profited from recent exposure as a Time cover subject (9/7/53), as would Dave Brubeck that November. Among her many fans was Paul Desmond, who extemporized this willowy blues in tribute. Desmonds self-described "dry martini" sound derived partly from Lester Young and partly from the opening high-pitched bassoon in Stravinsky's Le Sacr du Printemps. His lyricism, however, was pure Desmond. Paul's biographer Doug Ramsey reports Miss Hepburn played "Audrey" every night before sleep. She must've had sweet dreams.

This 1953 performance by the Dave Brubeck Quartet was recorded at Oberlin College, a school with a renowned music conservatory that neither had jazz instruction or particularly encouraged it. However, by the enthusiastic applause of the students, it’s easy to tell that this audience was eager to embrace modern jazz.
More importantly, this live album documents the early years of Brubeck’s career. Drummer Joe Morello and bassist Gene Wright had yet to join his quartet, but instead JAZZ AT OBERLIN features spirited performances by Lloyd Davis and Ron Crotty, respectively. Brubeck (piano) and Paul Desmond (alto saxophone) are the stars of the show, and Desmond’s solos are particularly intriguing. Heavily influenced by Charlie Parker, Desmond’s playing straddles the line between the emerging West Coast “cool” sound and bebop (which itself was less than a decade old in ‘53). Five standards are heard here, and each one really allows the group to stretch. The interplay between Desmond and Brubeck on the intro to “The Way You Look Tonight” shows the strength of their collaboration, even at this early juncture. Elsewhere, Brubeck’s bold—indeed almost brash—solo on “How High the Moon” is quite a highlight. It’s apparent that this band was destined for greatness.
