This excellent LP gives one a definitive look at altoist Lee Konitz at a period of time when he was breaking away from being a sideman and a student of Lennie Tristano and asserting himself as a leader. With pianist Ronnie Ball, bassist Percy Heath and drummer Alan Levitt, Konitz explores a variety of his favorite chord changes, some of which were disguised by newer melodies such as "Hi Beck," "Subconscious Lee" and "Sound Lee." Among the other highpoints of this well-recorded set are "Foolin' Myself" and a lengthy exploration of "If I Had You."

Here's a shot of a very young Chet Baker, taken here in St. Louis at The Glass Bar (Peacock Alley). I'm guessing this is right around 1956, shortly after Chet had returned from his first trip to Europe, resulting in the untimely overdose death of pianist Dick Twardzik. Pictured here along with Chet are tenor player Phil Urso, drummer Lawrence Marable and I'm guessing Carson Smith. Maybe someone out there can verify this. The photo was taken by Bernie Thrasher.

This SteepleChase CD for the first time releases music from a Sept. 17, 1959 Copenhagen concert featuring trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and his Quintet of the period (which includes altoist Leo Wright, pianist Junior Mance, bassist Art Davis and drummer Teddy Stewart). Wright (who doubled on flute) was a perfectly suitable musical partner for Gillespie (staying with the group until 1962) and was always able to take assertive solos without trying to stealing the spotlight from the trumpeter. Diz is in good spirits throughout these two sets, singing a good-humored "Ooh-Shoo-Be-Doo-Bee" and scatting furiously on "Lady Be Good." His trumpet chops are in excellent form and his solos are as complex as ever. Highlights include "My Man," "Wheatleigh Hall," "Night in Tunisia" and "Woody'n You." ~ Scott Yanow

Chet Baker's performance here is both fragile and passionate. Baker is joined by Van Morrison and reunited with Elvis Costello, with whom he recorded Shipbuilding at Ronnie Scott's intimate English club. In interviews with Costello, the pain and happiness hidden between his wrinkled, tired face pour out like so many notes.

Chet Baker's appearance at Ronnie Scott's in London was taped near the end of his life, when the ravages of drug addiction were apparent in his face as well as his demeanor on stage, but the magic was still present in his playing. Baker starts slowly with the bittersweet ballad "Ellen David," following it with his fragile vocal interpretation of a lightly swinging "Just Friends," though he is a decent scat singer. "Shifting Down" is an obscure work by Kenny Dorham that is one of the high points of this concert for Baker. Unfortunately, the visuals to the opening of the funky "Love for Sale" are ruined somewhat by the director's inane decision to emulate MTV videos and use a series of stills instead of just sticking to the action on stage. Interview excerpts taped offstage are interspersed between some of the tracks, though Elvis Costello's technique as an interviewer is rather erratic. Guest segments include a painfully dull rendition of "Send in the Clowns," featuring Van Morrison blandly reciting the lyrics with a cheat sheet in hand for reference; Elvis Costello also has to have the lyrics handy while performing his numbers with Baker ("The Very Thought of You" and a medley of "You Don't Know What Love Is" and "I'm a Fool to Want You"), which he delivers with a straight pop approach rather than trying to improvise, although he at least seems to know these standards. Pianist Michel Grailler and bassist Riccardo del Fra provide excellent support, the camera work and sound are excellent except for a few minor lapses, and the audience is respectfully silent until the conclusion of each piece -- a near impossibility in most nightclubs in Baker's homeland.
