Live in Greenwich Village was Albert Ayler\’s first recording for Impulse, and is arguably his finest moment, not only for the label, but ever. This double-CD reissue combines both of the Village concerts — documented only partially on previously released LPs — recorded in 1965 and 1966 with two very different groups. The Village gigs reveal the mature Ayler whose music embodied bold contradictions: There are the sweet, childlike, singalong melodies contrasted with violent screaming peals of emotion, contrasted with the gospel and R&B shouts of jubilation, all moving into and through one another. On the 1965 date, which featured Ayler, his brother Donald on trumpet, Joel Freedman on cello, bassist Lewis Worrell, and the great Sunny Murray on drums, the sound is one of great urgency. Opening with "Holy Ghost," the Aylers come out stomping and Murray double times them to bring the bass and cello to ground level in order to anchor musical proceedings to their respective generated sounds. "Truth Is Marching In" casts a bleating, gospelized swirl against a backdrop of three- and four-note "sung" phrases that are constantly repeated, à la a carny band before kicking down all the doors and letting it rip for almost 13 minutes. On the 1967 date of the second disc, the Aylers are augmented with drummer Beaver Harris, violinist Michel Sampson, Bill Folwell and Alan Silva on basses, and trombonist George Steele on the closer, "Universal Thoughts." "For John Coltrane" opens the set with a sweltering abstraction of tonalities in the strings and horns. On "Change Has Come," the abstraction remains but the field of language is deeper, denser, more urgent. Only with "Spiritual Rebirth," which opens with a four-note theme, does one get the feeling that the band has been pacing itself for this moment, and that the concert has become an actual treatise on the emotion of "singing" as an ensemble in uncharted territories. Throughout the rest of the set, Ayler\’s band buoys him perfectly, following him up through every new cloud of unknowing into a sublime musical and emotional beyond which, at least on recordings, would never be realized again. This set documents some of the most robust and influential fermentation that was taking place in '60s jazz around the Village in New York City. Recorded live in 1966 and 1967, Live is transcendental church music, grounded in conventional African-American spirituality as it reaches exultantly for the sky. Traditional melody-then-solos structure splits at the seams as tunes spill into collective improvisation. The band often suggests a gaggle of patriots crying out in personal jubilation but rallying together, again and again, to sing a cherished anthem anew.
Ayler and Don Cherry maintain a constant tension between simple melodicism and rapturous free blowing in their soloing. "Truth Is Marching In" makes a triumphant New Orleans-style crash, while "Divine Peacemaker" has the regal quality of the music that announces a monarch's arrival. "Angels" is a lovely, if slightly tongue-in-cheek, duet between Ayler and pianist Call Cobbs Jr. The latter's changes are fashioned after the manner of an early-20th-century fantasia, his piano sounding as though it had spent its youth in a dingy Western saloon. Ayler blows a sweet lament over Cobbs' rolling arpeggios, conjuring images of divine winged messengers stumbling tipsily onto a street corner after a hard day at the ol' salvation grind.

At this stage in his remarkable career, the lovely fall of his prime as it were, any recording featuring Hank Jones is apt to be viewed as a conversation piece, at least to some extent. The pianist is, after all, on the verge of celebrating his 89th birthday.

Kids, however, is a series of delightful conversations in itself, inspired by a collection of swing, bop and pop tunes. Those familiar with the pair’s recent Blue Note recordings—2004’s I’m All for You—Ballad Songbook and 2005’s Joyous Encounter—will recognize certain traits, not least being Jones’ attentive and unfussy accompaniments. But on this intimate date, recorded live in Manhattan, what’s particularly apparent is the ease with which Lovano and Jones exchange ideas while complementing not just each other but also the tune at hand. The duo’s performances cover a lot of ground, from vibrantly animated bop flag-wavers (“Budo” and the Lovano-penned “Charlie Chan”) to hauntingly soulful balladry (“Lazy Afternoon,” the album’s soprano-limned coda).
Yes, strictly speaking, Kids is Lovano’s latest release, and his performances are typically expressive and assured. But Jones isn’t making a cameo here. He’s an equal partner throughout, and his playing is sometimes marked by a liveliness that can be traced back to the era of two-fisted swing and stride. Each musician contributes an original piece with Jones’ “Lullaby” providing a waltzing interlude. And, once again, the duo honors the memory of Thad Jones, the pianist’s late brother, by celebrating his songbook with as much ingenuity as affection

This excellent set from guitarist Jimmy Bruno can easily be divided into two. The first four numbers (which include “Move” and “Grooveyard”) showcase Bruno in a trio with bassist Craig Thomas and drummer Vince Ector; the guitarist mostly swings quite hard. The other six songs feature the great altoist Bobby Watson, who takes spirited solos on “Segment,” “Au Privave,” and “Anthropology,” adding to the intensity and drive of this high-quality bop set. There are some quieter moments, including an alto/guitar duet on “These Foolish Things,” but the uptempo tunes are most memorable.

An extended previously unissued live performance by one of the true masters of jazz guitar. Two hours of never heard solos by Jimmy Raney recorded in the year of his musical comeback. 

From 1967 to 1974, the great guitarist Jimmy Raney (1927-1995) went into semi-retirement in Louisville, and didn't make a single trip to the recording studios. Whether this was due to personal problems (like his growing alcohol addiction) or to the lack of interest by the major recording companies, his discography presents a notable gap of almost ten years, which is only represented by a couple of live recordings. 

Recorded with amateur equipment on December 17 & 18, 1974 at New York's famous Bradley's club, the concerts on this CD occurred just after Raney's comeback. Like many other great jazzmen, Jimmy Raney had a unique musical sound, which encompassed both modern and traditional styles. 

Considering that this is an amateur recording made at a crowded club, the sound quality here is obviously not up to Gambit's usual standards. However, we felt that the musical and historical importance of these performances more than compensated for any deficiencies on the original masters. 



A very spare and stripped down live date from Jimmy Raney -- one that mostly just features bass accompaniment, plus a bit of extra rhythm guitar on a few tracks! The unfettered sound is quite unique, and a great opportunity to hear Raney's talents on the guitar during this under-recorded point in his career -- and the live date marks one of the first moments of a mid-70s comeback that showed Jimmy as more imaginative on his solos than ever! Most tracks are quite long and open -- with bass from Bill Takas, plus extra rhythm guitar from Eric Diehl on 5 of the 16 numbers on the 2CD set. Titles include "I Love You", "I Remember You", "Darn That Dream", "Billie's Bounce", "Out Of Nowhere", "On Green Dolphin Street", "Motion", "Days Of Wine & Roses", and "Indiana/Donna Lee".

Not a hi-fi recording, I guess it is motly for die-hard jazz guitar fans. A great, rare chance to hear Jimmy Raney performing live in the 70's, however.

Recorded at two 1953 Boston club dates, AT STORYVILLE is an album of loose, energetic and mightily swinging music. The first half of the record, which features the great pianist Red Garland in his only recorded date with Parker, is slightly peppier than the later session. Garland is still developing his style here, and his playing has a certain suaveness and bounce that reflects the influence of swing era pianists like Nat "King" Cole. Parker is loose and fiery, pushing the band ahead with a stream of energetic, serpentine solos.

On the second date, Bird's playing is somewhat more lyrical and subdued. He does seem to perk up on "Cool Blues," however, perhaps spurred on by the punchy, immaculately phrased trumpet work of Herb Pomeroy. While some have suggested that Parker's talents were in decline in the '50s, AT STORYVILLE was recorded less than two years before Bird's death and clearly demonstrates he was still capable of playing with his typical humor, pure tone and flawless feel.

Capturing the entirety of one of Norman Granz's legendary Jazz at The Philharmonic sets, complete with an effusive introduction by Granz himself, PARIS 1960 is one of the best of the many live recordings of Julian "Cannonball" Adderley. The 55-minute set finds the alto saxophonist at a pivotal point in his career, as he was moving away from hard bop into the funkier, more groove-oriented, but no less technically masterful soul-jazz style that made him a star in the '60s.
The opening "Jeannine" is a hard-bop standard, but the Adderley quintet, featuring (as always) his brother Nat on cornet, stretches it out, sounding relaxed yet still intense. "The Chant," which Adderley had just recorded with his sideline group (the Pollwinners, featuring Wes Montgomery), sounds completely different--but no less outstanding--in its guitar-less arrangement. PARIS 1960 is essential for Adderley fans.

This live concert was released on a 1986 double album, Live at the Montreal Jazz Festival 1985. Pianist Ahmad Jamal dig into three originals, an obscurity, Jack DeJohnette's "Ebony," and a trio of jazz standards (including "Footprints"). This particular group is often reminiscent of Jamal's trios of the '50s, although with more modern bass playing and some denser piano than before.

It is a pity that this LP is long out of print (and that the Catalyst label went out of business quite awhile ago), for it gives listeners an excellent example of the playing of pianist Ahmad Jamal in the mid-1970s. His group (comprised of guitarist Calvin Keys, bassist John Heard, drummer Frank Gant and Seldon Newton on conga) was temporarily larger than usual, and Jamal stretches out on three originals (including "Effendi") and a lengthy remake of his biggest hit, "Poinciana."
